The Doobie Brothers began as a Northern California bar band for Hell's Angels, which makes the flute in their early setup feel like a minor miracle. Best Of The Doobies catches the years before the furniture got noticeably plusher. 'Long Train Runnin'' is superb: Tom Johnston's guitar chops away at the groove; congas keep it twitchy and that harmonica break turns up with its shirt half-unbuttoned. 'China Grove' has Bill Payne battering the piano behind those chunky guitars. 'Black Water' somehow makes banjo and an a cappella coda feel like perfectly sensible business. Then Michael McDonald arrives. Different weather entirely.
