Sponge Cake is the debut studio album by Australian funk and hip hop group Winston Surfshirt, released in September 2017 via Sweat It Out.
The group started when solo musician, Winston Surfshirt, formed the six-piece funk, hip hop band in 2015 with Surfshirt on lead vocals and multi-instrumentals, Bustlip on beats, The Bone on trombone, Bik Julio on bass guitar, Dool on keyboards and Mi-K on guitar and keys.
Their stylistic influences include both surf rock and West Coast hip hop. The band have performed at Falls Festival and Splendour in the Grass, and have supported Rüfüs on tour.
On their debut album, Sponge Cake; a 16-track melange of summer sounds blurring the lines between funk and hip-hop, bound together with airy vocals and bold brass; the band received nods from international tastemakers Jason Bentley (KCRW), Huw Stephens & Phil Taggart (BBC Radio 1), Lauren Laverne (BBC Radio 6), Beats 1 host Zane Lowe & Sir Elton John, publicly labelling them his 'favourite band of the moment'.
After earning triple j feature album, the band went on to sell out all 10 shows across the country on their national Sponge Cake tour, marking them as one of Australia’s most prolific upcoming acts.
This double album 2LP record set is on black vinyl housed in a gatefold sleeve, pressed in Australia via Sweat It Out.
