Columbia Records originally released the album in March 1963. Produced by the legend Teo Macero, "Monk's Dream" featured a quartet with Monk on piano, Charlie Rouse on sax, John Ore on bass, and Frankie Dunlop on drums.
"Monk's Dream is Thelonious Monks' first recording in several years," wrote Teo on the liner notes, "It has special significance here at Columbia Records because it is his first recording for us"
