Originally released in November 2002 via American Recordings / Columbia, Steal This Album! was compiled following the online leak of unreleased sessions from the legendary Toxicity album recordings. Rather than letting unfinished mixes circulate, the band returned to the studio with producer Rick Rubin to re-record, polish, and properly master the tracks, turning what could have been a b-sides throwaway into an absolute fan favourite.
