Etta James was already receiving singing lessons at the age of five. The choir director of a Baptist church in Los Angeles had noticed little Etta‘s voice. The early effort was to pay off. Success in the mainstream did not come until late. With „All I Could Do Was Cry“ came the big breakthrough in 1960. Since then, Etta James‘ full-sounding and mature voice has been omnipresent and carried on from generation to generation. To this day, her classic „At Last“ is used again and again in Hollywood films without wearing out. In 1990, Coca Cola takes her version of „I Just Want To Make Love You“ for a commercial. In 2011, superstar DJ Avicii uses a sample of Etta James from her song „Something‘s Got A Hold On Me“ for his global hit „Levels.“ Etta James belongs to the Rock ’n Roll Hall of Fame and the Blues Hall of Fame. She has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, has won several Grammies and is ranked 22nd on Rolling Stone‘s list of the 100 greatest singers of all time.
