Gipsy Rhumba was Soul Jazz's 2012 doing for rumba catalana what they'd done for a dozen other overlooked grooves: building a definitive English-language document for a style barely known outside its country of origin. Compiled by David El Indio with notes by Jose Gomez, it remains the first non-Spanish compilation to properly examine how Catalan Roma musicians in 1960s Barcelona fused flamenco's ventilador technique with Cuban son, Caribbean rhumba and American rock & roll, making a musical manticore if we've ever heard one. The 70s reveals shows the style as its absorbs keyboards, electric bass and brass. Out of print for a decade on CD; this 2026 edition repackages the thing on deluxe double vinyl, with Jacques Leonard's gipsy-life photography on both inner sleeves.
