Originally released in 1978, Prehistoric Sounds marked the third full-length from Aussie punk heroes The Saints as well as the end of their original iteration. Where the band's sophomore endeavour Eternally Yours (also released in 1978) began embracing r&b and swing compositions augmented by the addition of a horn section, their follow up nosedived ever further into brassy melodies until guitarist/co-songwriter Ed Kuepper couldn't take it anymore, subsequently departing to form avant-garde post-punk troupe Laughing Clowns. Noted for essentially offering an audible form of creative differences, as Kuepper became more intrigued with progression and experimentation while band leader Chris Bailey pined for direct melodies and succinct structures, the warring of egos across Prehistoric Sounds resulted in a unique intersection of approaches not necessarily favoured by either songwriter yet praised and adored by generations of listeners.
