Queens-born singer-songwriter Yaya Bey returns with some of her most joyous, sharp-edged and fluid work to date. Blending r&b, hip-hop, soul, jazz and a heavy lean into Caribbean sounds, the Brooklyn-based artist delivers a warm, unguarded record that dances with both grief and liberation. Tracks like 'wake up bitch' and 'bella noches pt. 1' lay bare her frustrations with rent hikes, god and late capitalism, while the big-stepping 'in a circle' and sunny, hook-laced soca cut 'merlot and grigio (feat. Father Philis)' channel levity and diasporic connection. Bey's refusal to flatten her own experience-toggling between defiance, humour and desire-is what makes 'raisins', 'dream girl' and 'choice' so resonant. She sounds energised, but never overproduced. That's in part thanks to support from Butcher Brown, BADBADNOTGOOD and Exaktly, whose textures help build a project that's wide-ranging but coherent, never polished for its own sake. A radical, joyful evolution.
